Seriously. Best. Weekend. I want to share about 50 photos with you, but that might be a bit much, so here's 5 (I'm writing "5" without having actually picked them yet, forcing myself to limit the number I upload, so I have to choose the best.)
We went to New York for the weekend to participate in Lollapuzoola, a deliberately very fun tournament in a church basement on the Upper West Side. We took the bus down on Friday and stayed in a hotel on 47th and Lexington (thank you Priceline Express for the very good deal). Walking out of the Port Authority into rush hour craziness in the middle of tourist season on a stinking hot evening is something else.
Our friend Angela got to the finals of her division and competed on stage, taking second place. Michael won a trophy for worst handwriting. I chatted to all our smart sweet funny nerdy cool friends, drank good coffee, ate good food, walked all over the city. [ok, it it was very difficult to pick a single picture to go with this paragraph, so I'm opting for the one with me in it].
On Sunday we began with a trip to Brooklyn for the world's best vegan donuts, or as we like to call them, donuts. Katie came with us because she understands.
Then Doug arranged for a bunch of us to see the Detroit Tigers at Yankee Stadium. Somehow this was my first ever major league baseball game, and I am not kidding when I tell you it was absolutely exciting. Michael has multiple team allegiances, and since he went to grad school in Michigan, one of them is to Detroit. They lost, but only after a dramatic 9th inning. If you care about baseball you probably already know about the game, and if you don't care, then it probably isn't worth trying to explain, and I'm probably not the best person to do it anyway. I sat next to Addie, who is a sports commenter by trade, and watched him score the game old-skool, by hand.
More dinner, more chatting, more walking around town, and then Monday morning was breakfast and a walk back across town to the joy that is the basement of the Port Authority to catch the bus home.
Now, let me go pick those photos....hmm, I appear to have used "most illustrative of my point" and "has me in it" in addition to "best" as my photo criteria. I also have only put 4 in, so here I go looking for a bonus photo....
